Reds are set to try again for player who combines pace and goal-scoring ability the way boss Van Gaal wants and - they believe - fancies the move
Manchester United are preparing a second offer, worth £20million, for Southampton’s Sadio Mane.
United failed with an opening £15m bid, and Saints insist wide-man Mane will not be leaving St Mary’s before the summer transfer window closes.
That initial move for the player - which Southampton denied receiving - was just to test the waters.
The Old Trafford giants are prepared to offer closer to Saints’ £25million valuation of the Senegal forward.
United boss Louis van Gaal has been tracking Mane for some time and feels the 23-year-old has the combination of pace and goal-scoring ability he wants.
And the Reds are encouraged by the understanding that Mane is keen on joining them, just a year after Southampton signed him from Austrain side Red Bull Salzburg in a £10m deal.
They feel this strengthens their hand in their attempts to persuade Saints to cash in on yet another one of their stars.
Manchester United target Thomas Muller speaks out over Old Trafford transfer talk
Thomas Muller has described reports Manchester United are prepared to spend €100m on him as 'crazy'.
United tried to sign Bayern Munich forward Muller last year and Louis van Gaal is reportedly still keen to reunite with a player he nurtured in Germany, reports the Manchester Evening News.
German tabloid Bild reported on Wednesday morning United had offered £60m for Muller, 25, in an attempt to bolster their forward line.
The Reds have dropped their interest in Pedro, who has joined Chelsea and are keen on Southampton winger Sadio Mane.
Muller would represent a marquee addition, though the World Cup winner was stunned by his valuation.
"It's basically crazy the numbers which are currently kicking around in football - that's just business," Muller told German broadcaster Sport1.
Muller also saw the funny side of the endless speculation on Monday, when he played in a testimonial match against Dynamo Dresden.
"In Dresden, a fan addressed me with a megaphone: 'Hey €100m man, what is your playing shirt worth?' That made me smile," Muller added.
Bayern sporting executive Matthias Sammer indicated Muller would remain at the club after his two-goal weekend appearance against Hamburg.
“His performances have caused a stir, not Thomas,” Sammer said.
“We can’t be blamed for anything but this. Rummenigge was right when pointing out that he is a player who has no price tag.”
