According to reports, the Frenchman's former side Newcastle are interested in reacquiring his services.
Italian newspaper La Stampa claim Louis van Gaal has submitted a British record £61.25m bid for the 21-year-old, who left Old Trafford in 2012.
But the move broke down after Manchester United made a last-minute swoop to bring him to Old Trafford on deadline day.
French radio station RMC report that a £12m season-long loan deal was approved by the Reds' money-men FSG in August.
