Christian Benteke latest
Christian Benteke is a step closer to sealing his £32.5million move
from Aston Villa to Liverpool after completing his medical in London.
Benteke is now heading to Liverpool to complete the formalities of his transfer.
Liverpool hope to confirm finally that Benteke has completed his move later today.
The Reds had hoped to be in a position to announce the deal yesterday, but the medical has taken longer than anticipated to complete because they had to fly club doctor Andy Massey back from the club's tour of Australia and the Far East.
The deal has also been held up by the logistical challenge of Massey and Benteke getting around London to conduct the various scans and tests.
Benteke, 24, was due to begin training at Melwood today, but that is not likely to happen now until tomorrow.
No excuses for failure from LVG
Those who know Louis van Gaal well say what he wants, he usually gets. That has certainly been the case this summer at Manchester United.
Van Gaal wanted Bastian Schweinsteiger, the Germany captain with whom he worked at Bayern Munich. He got him.
The United boss wanted Morgan Schneiderlin, one of the most accomplished young midfielders in the Premier League. He got him.
And it was the same story with Dutch winger Memphis Depay and Italian full-back Matteo Darmian, both of whom have bolstered Van Gaal's squad with their arrival.
The 63-year-old also won his battle with his employers for a shorter pre-season tour here in the US, after complaining at the distances he and his players had to travel on last summer's gruelling trip.
Van Gaal even had the audacity to switch the second game of United's tour from the University of California's 62,500 Memorial Stadium in Berkeley to the more modest Avaya Stadium, home of the San Jose Earthquakes, which holds just 18,000.
Against that backdrop, of Van Gaal getting virtually everything his own way this summer, including another two probable signings before the transfer deadline, there can be no excuses for failure.
Manchester United close goalkeeper deal
Big news from Italy.
La Gazzetta report that Manchester United have completed a deal for Argentine international keeper Sergio Romero.
The stopper is available on a free transfer from Sampdoria and is said to have agreed a three-year deal with United, as they eye someone to rival David de Gea.
The likes of Roma and Inter had also been linked recently, but an agreement with United was reportedly reached this morning.
