Fans of PSV Eindhoven sent flowers to the hospitalised Luke Shaw following his double leg break, Dutch media report.
The Manchester United defender fractured his tibia and fibula following a challenge from PSV's Hector Moreno on Tuesday night.
A spokesman for Dutch newspaper Eindhoven Dagblad said: "This is the way how you deal in professional football with an opponent."
The flowers reportedly reached Shaw at the St Anna Ziekenhuis hospital on Wednesday.
Shaw was due to have a second planned operation on Friday as part of his long road to recovery.When asked about the legality of his challenge on Shaw, Mexico international Moreno remained adamant he had done nothing wrong.
“No, no, I got the ball,” he said. “I looked back to see where the ball went and it was above the goal.
